Mastering Art for a New Age

“I strive to create works that showcase a balance between the seemingly disparate elements of mathematics, systems, patterns, and natural beauty.”

Stephan Duquesnoy is at the forefront of bringing art to life through advanced algorithms. He has 20 years of experience as a digital artist and left an indelible mark on the art world.

His art is incredible, unique, and easily recognizable as his. “As a creative, I look more into the systems behind it, why things work in a certain way that they work, and then try and use that in a creative way.”

As artistically gifted as Stephan is, it wasn’t an easy transition into the art world. He was first rejected by an art academy “because they said the work I was doing wasn’t creative.” He started his professional life in IT but pivoted to designing art for video games. This took him through various roles in the gaming industry, from concept artist to AI programmer. Later, he would become a digital arts lecturer at the University of Arts Utrecht for 15 years before stopping in September 2022 to focus on his art.

His work is a beautiful and seamless blend of programming, traditional methods, and his own unique style. “I started looking into how to draw in the 1900s when it was more of a trade and a craft,” he explains. “That’s the kind of stuff that I learned from and is what I base my work on a lot. I recently created a 3d system that can cut gems and jewelry as if they are physically jewels. And that’s entirely based on a book from the 1900s. I love researching into history and seeing how things used to be done and figuring out how we can do that today and how I can do something.”

Stephan’s art comprises lush ornaments, flowers, and strong feminine characters heavily inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite painters. “Their philosophy of beauty and the integration of art into daily life is a guiding light in my own artistic pursuits. I strive to create works that showcase a balance between the seemingly disparate elements of mathematics, systems, patterns, and natural beauty.”

Sophisticated and stylistic: “I aim to showcase the interconnectedness of all things and the beauty that can be found in the patterns and systems of the natural world. I hope that my art inspires others to see the world in a new and exciting way and to appreciate the beauty that can be found in the intersection of seemingly disparate elements.”
