Laurence Fuller’s resume is full and long. Actor, poet, producer, musician, and web3 artist: this creative does it all. Apart from starring in HBO Max’s series titled MINX, he creates art for web3. Intriguingly, Laurence draws parallels between the web3 space and Hollywood’s independent film world regarding artistic expression and determination.
“The independent film world is like just so much of the same ethos. Guess if you make it, you believe in a movie, right? And you’ve got the guts to, first of all, make it, and crazy enough to pull the people together, charming enough to make that work, determined enough to see it through against all odds. And, you end up somehow in the film festival with the movie you’ve made along with like a hundred other directors and actors, hoping on a wing and a prayer that it’ll get noticed, that you’ll be able to make the next thing.”
The first time he heard of NFTs is still vivid in his mind. He quickly recognized the opportunities presented by web3, the blockchain, and NFTs, and dove in with excitement, curiosity, and—most importantly—a natural talent for storytelling. In March 2021, he released his first collaborative effort in spoken word poetry and visual art on the blockchain. Since then, he has been actively involved in the web3 community. He may have adapted to the blockchain, but the blockchain also adapted to him. “I want each element of my work to be completely unique and that idea of uniqueness is, of course, contentious. I guess AI, I think is the evolution of collage. A lot of collage artists have become AI artists since the advent of AI.”
Laurence sees tremendous potential in the NFT space, not only as a developing medium but also as a platform to showcase fresh creative voices. One area he highlights as providing incredible opportunities is combining NFTs with film (particularly shorts), as he believes that shares NFTs’ adventurous aesthetic attitude. “They don’t have anything that puts out a mixed media with video and music and performance, yet maybe they will in the future.”
