Latashá is a force to be reckoned with in the world of blockchain-based art. Born in Brooklyn, New York, her background and upbringing have profoundly impacted her work.
“Brooklyn is just such a musical space to grow up in. You’re constantly hearing sounds from all over. It’s very diverse in sound. The borough’s busyness allows you to encapsulate so much into your consciousness on what music could sound like and be like,” she says.
But it’s not just the sounds of Brooklyn that inspire Latashá. Her parents are her biggest artistic influences, with her mother’s love of dance hall, reggae, and Latin music playing a significant role in shaping her own sound. Other major influences include Missy Elliot, Kanye West, and Beyoncé.
Latashá’s interest in the NFT space began in 2020 when her partner Jah introduced her to cryptoart. Initially skeptical, she dove deep into the rabbit hole of NFTs and realized the potential for artists to have autonomy over their work and a direct connection with their consumers.
In February 2021, Latashá became the first female rapper to mint an NFT, releasing her music video “I Like Dat” on the platform Zora. The video is now worth over $2 million. One of her most successful videos is “MAKDA VERSE.”
Latashá’s most defining project to date is “ZORATOPIA,” where she serves as Head of Community for this guidance platform and a cultural world where users can connect and learn about each other through real-life and virtual experiences.
“We utilize ZORATOPIA to be a spaceship for people to see what web3 is and to really see the value of the art that you release,” she explains.
