THERE’S A HINT OF CYNICISM IN KARSEN DAILY’S APPROACH TO WEB3. SHE’S BEEN BURNED, HURT, AND LET DOWN, BUT HER STREET-SMART APPROACH AND NEW BUSINESS-SAVVY PROTECT HER FROM WHAT SHE CALLS WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING. SHE BELIEVES THE ENVIRONMENT INEVITABLY BREEDS GREED: “WITH BEAUTY AND LUXURY AND WEALTH, YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE GREED, AND YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE KNOCKOFFS AND FAKES AND WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING.”
Karsen loves beautiful things and bought her first NFT in early 2021. She also sold an unseen Andy Warhol photograph in an auction with Opensea and brought the first designer toy company NFT drop to Nifty Gateway. At the time, Clubhouse was massive, and she found a community of talented artists, developers, and designers with whom she would have long conversations all hours of the day and night. Soon, she quit her job in branding and marketing to head to LA to establish a web3 consultancy. She says: “It was here that I learned how to become smart, like from a business sense. And then in the last two years, I would say I’m becoming a lot street smarter too.”
Her big obsession is with the technology, digital identity, smart contracts, capabilities, and learning and asking questions like, can this be done? She is also a collector of art and limited edition art pieces and is adamant that existing art institutions still have a role to play with NFTs. “What do the institutions exist for if they can’t be the ones to sell NFT art? If they can’t market you, if they can’t do their job to convince and sell their buyers on NFTs, and on the value of these pieces, then…” she shrugs.
Her skepticism around the longevity of the current crop of NFT artists and developers is apparent, and she wonders if, in 5-10 years from now, who would be at an NFT reunion. “So let’s see what actually lives on and proves itself to be useful and valuable in the future,” she muses.
We have no doubt that Karsen herself will continue to evolve and make a significant impact in the web3 space.
